When multiple of the funniest and silliest in your group of pals tell you that the show they watched last night was “one of the funniest things they’ve ever seen, an absolute game-changer” you can’t help but have your interest piqued. I didn’t want to know any more than that, I just knew that I had to get a ticket. Quickly.
Not two hours after the tip off, I ascend the stairs of Just The Tonics’ Mash House, completely unprepared for what I’m going to be watching over the next sixty minutes. Delia! Delia! The Flat-Chested Witch! follows a young witch, who simply wants to become a girl and to fit in. It’s hard to describe Delia Delia, but from the very first moment they walk into the room you know you need to strap it; it’s going to be wild.
New York based Amando Houser is a powerhouse of a clown, their physicality unwavering in its playfulness, the generosity they give to their audience is utterly enigmatic. There are parts of the show that require our small yet mighty audience to really invest in the craziness - an instruction guide on what a period is and how to deal with it, a Mountain Dew filled frat boy-esque frenzy, amongst many other moments of absurdity.
There’s no hiding it, parts of the show are disgusting and painful to watch, but in the best way possible. Houser knows what they’re doing, a consummate professional. They bring us back to reality with a gut-wrenching story of a high-school sports coach and their ability to switch from making us laugh, to making us feel deeply and even shedding a tear, is a testament to their ability to hold a story with such unpredictability; it really punches and therefore soars.
To put it simply, this is one of the funniest and most moving shows I have seen in a very long time. Challenging, hilarious, disgusting, heartbreaking, Delia! Delia! The Flat-Chested Witch! should be seen by as many people as humanly (or witchly?) possible. Please don’t miss this one, it’s utter magic.
Delia! Delia! The Flat-Chested Witch! is on at 21:55 until the 25th August (not 12th or 19th) at Just The Tonic Mash House - tickets here.
