Where did the time go eh? One day you're playing pirates in the garden whilst your mum sprays you with the hose, proclaiming she's a sea monster, the next you're stressing about the joys of council tax…how fun. Shows like Max Norman: A Pirate’s Life For Me are important in today's society, they help capture some of that essential childlike wonder we all sorely miss from our youth. Sometimes I think we all forget to sit back, relax and just have a little fun.
This is a character comedy showcase, Max constantly battles to one up himself from character to character, in this fast paced swashbuckling story. Whether it's a bombastic sea god obsessed with cheese puns or a wretched hag ready to scam you of all your doubloons, the hits come thick and fast! Not all land in spectacular fashion but they don't overstay their welcome, if you aren't fond of one character the next will be along before you can say shiver me timbers!
It's nonsensical and jumps all over the place, like a child frantically trying to come up with the next playground plot point. This narrative eventually comes back full circle with a charming ending, which adds a nice sense of heart to the whole journey. We've all struggled with growing up and leaving parts of us behind, it makes you wish you could play pirates forever.
It's a hodge-podge ramshackle adventure led by a whimsical imaginative mind. The show is held together with glue, cardboard and whatever you can find in your pockets at the time. This show will have you saying 'mum please can I have ten more minutes to play pirates.’ The imaginative, gangly and pompous buffoon Max Norman knocks it out if the park and brings a delightfully whimsical seafaring adventure to this year's fringe, which reaches the fantastical heights akin to your classic childhood backyard adventures. So crack out the non alcoholic rum, polish off your cutlass and set sail to see this show!
